There are three courses of action your dentist can take to fix or replace your damaged or missing teeth. He or she can either use your adjacent natural teeth to fabricate a bridge, or removable partial denture. Alternatively a single implant may be used to support an implant-supported crown.
Single missing tooth
In some cases your dental implant can be placed immediately following extraction of your damaged tooth. Your dentist will evaluate your tooth and the surrounding bone to determine if you are a candidate for an immediate dental implant replacement.

Several options are available for replacing a single missing tooth including a bridge, a removable partial denture, or a single dental implant.

A dental implant is the most conservative treatment for replacing a single missing tooth as it does not rely on the adjacent teeth for support or retention. Dental implants look and feel the most like natural teeth as they emerge from the gums like a natural tooth. They also do not require removal of healthy tooth structure from the adjacent natural teeth.

Your dentist will evaluate if you have enough bone height and width for placement of a dental implant by making a 3D X-ray know as a CBCT. Your dentist will also evaluate your overall health to determine if you are a good candidate for a dental implant tooth replacement.

The procedure takes about an hour. However, you should avoid using your dental implant to chew hard foods for 4-6 months after your implant is placed. This will give your surrounding bone time to bond to the surface of your dental implant. After your bone bonds to your dental implant your dentist will make a crown with which you can smile and chew normally.
